Cows On The Lam

Big shout out today to Sharon’s sister Laura. She is family, once-removed. She’s also a helluva fine writer. So if you don’t click the link, here, and read her short essay in honor of freedom this July the 4th (it’s called “Cows On The Lam”) – well, then brother, it’s your loss. And I don’t mean maybe.

Cows NOT on the lam
These perfectly content cows pictured near Point Reyes are NOT on the lam.  What, you think they’re gonna swim to China? Then again, breathing in that salt-sea air, maybe they were a little stunned – as were we this fine summer’s day – by all that Pacific beauty? Could be, could be… stranger things than this are undoubtedly true.

Foretaste of freedom…

Five heifers from my sister’s farm recently went on the lam. The jail breakers are young, just weaned. They don’t even eat grain yet, but they’re brave and bold and maybe highly incentivized. How’d they escape the pasture? They didn’t jump the fence (though I’ve seen this). They didn’t find a break in the fence. They went under the fence at a stream….
