Plains Cottonwood

We saw this stately specimen on our walk along the High Line Canal yesterday. I estimate maybe 80′ tall and 80 years old – just a guess? If you’re up for it, lots of fascinating background on the Plains Cottonwood can be found here, here, and here. Or, much shorter, click the link here for the famous offering from Joyce Kilmer.

  1. We had two enormous plains cottonwoods in our yard, one tree immensely taller and fuller than the other. I spent many summer hours lying underneath the bigger tree reading library books. And the absolutely heavenly sigh of its leaves just outside my bedroom window sang me to sleep most summer nights. Of all the trees I love, the cottonwood is my favorite. Thanks for this post’s feeding my nostalgia, Dan.
