Day Ten – Woo Hoo – No Shot Of Bathroom Scales

Yeah, I bet you too thought I’d never make it to Day Ten – but I did – Woo Hoo! Actually there were a couple of days where I thought I’d be reduced to taking a shot of my feet on the bathroom scales. We can all be glad that didn’t happen. There are just some images you don’t need before your morning coffee. In any event, in honor of Day Ten here’s a photo that didn’t make the Day Eight Instagram cut, which I now know has a ten pix max per post. Thanks, Rach!

Day Ten - Woo Hoo. ParkCo.
Day Ten, Woo Hoo: You are now in South Park!

Although I didn’t realize it at the time, there was a little selfie reflection of me captured in this one. The sign’s just out there in the middle of nowhere, unrelated to any physical boundaries that I could see. One minute you’re hiking along in JeffCo, then all of a sudden – boom – you’re in South Park. Yeah, that South Park, of animated TV fame.  Ah well, there are worse fates I guess. You know, like a shot of my feet on the bathroom scales being one prime example. Because there are just some images you can never un-see. Woo Hoo!

Day Nine Of Ten – Only The Good Die Young

Taking a break from the photo-a-day gig here on Day Nine of Ten to present an obit that really moved me. The NYTimes story, definitely worth reading, here.  Comment approval, below. RIP, Daniel Kaminsky. Only the good die young.

If you are reading his obituary online, you owe your digital safety to him.

Staunton State Park Redux – Call 911?

Day Eight of Ten – Photos from today’s easy 8-mile hike in Staunton State Park (Redux) are on my Instagram account, here. Many thanks to RGW for helping me get set up there, since my iPhone3 was totally inadequate to the task. Teaser photo for those inclined to climb is below. Previous Staunton State Park post is here. Good luck navigating the Net, climbing the rocks, and calling 911 if you fall.

Staunton Redux - Risk v. Reward
I love this sign because, at the bottom it says “Call 911.” But the place is so remote, you only ever get zero bars.  So, good luck with that!

Wild Turkey Got Away – Day Six Of Ten

Originally I intended to capture a shot of a wild turkey trotting down our back driveway. But I was not quick enough on the draw, so you have to squint to see him – if you can even see him at all. What I didn’t notice at first were the late afternoon shadows of the craggy old cottonwood in the foreground.  Sometimes you miss what you were shooting for in the first place, but then you catch something you didn’t even notice or intend. Life is like that some days – or at least mine is. Not half bad if I do say so myself.

Toe In The Water – Day Five Of Ten

Last night we ventured out to the Brown Palace Ship Tavern. It was a little celebratory toe in the water for downtown dining after a long pandemic year of eating in. The portly bald restaurant manager in his mask looked just like Colorado Gov. Jared Polis. We enjoyed our soup and salad every bit as much as others enjoyed the prime rib special. Some things never change. Hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Toe in the Water - Ship Tavern

The nautical theme for this place is rooted in the storied history of Denver’s hotelier Brown family. Charts on the Tavern’s walls detail trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific shipping lanes.  “Unsinkable Molly Brown” was a passenger on the Titanic who made it out alive, unlike Leonardo DiCaprio. The Brown Palace has been continuously operating in downtown Denver at the corner of 17th and Broadway since 1892. The Ship Tavern opened in 1934. All in all, we highly recommend – whether just for a toe in the water, or as a recurring regular gig.

Ten Days – Ten Pix – Day Three

Ten Days – Ten Pix – Day Three.

Ten Days – Ten Pix – Day Two – Hunkered
Ten Days – Ten Pix – Day Two – Hunkered Down. The mulies enjoying the neighbor’s spring grass as seen from the power-line trail in North Rox.

This morning these mule deer were hunkered down in my back yard. Not much of a shot on a foggy cold day. But last Sunday we all enjoyed the afternoon sunshine together.  Me hiking the power-line trail in Roxborough North. Them grazing spring grass in a neighbor’s yard – as nature intended in both cases. These were all does. But I bet you four bucks there were… well you know. The guys are always nearby. You can count on it.  Last year’s post here.

Like I said, betcha four bucks.

Ten Days – Ten Pix – Day Two – Spiderman

Ten Days – Ten Pix – Day Two.  Last week the Fielding Tree Service guys were out doing their annual Spider Man routine to keep our Mountain Ash tree in good shape. And I didn’t even have to venture outside to get this shot. For more, see last year’s post, here. As always, I marvel at their fearless flexibility. And I also marvel that I was ever crazy enough in my misspent youth to attempt this without a safety rope. What could I have been thinking?

Ten Days – Ten Pix – Day Two – Spiderman!

Ten Days – Ten Pix – Day Two

Spiderman, Spiderman! Does whatever a spider can.
Spins a web any size,
Catches thieves, just like flies.
Look out! Here comes Spiderman!

Is he strong? Listen, Bud! He’s got radioactive blood.
Can he swing from a thread?
Take a look overhead.
Hey there, there goes Spiderman!

Extra credit for anyone who can remember verses 3 & 4 of the theme.
